Special Exhibit: Trains and Things!

March 28, 2016 - April 20, 2016

Open during regular business hours, closed March 27th and April 9th

For those local residents, who are not traveling over spring break and for visitors to beautiful Northern Michigan, the anticipation is building at Raven Hill Discovery Center.  This year, the excitement is all about trains!  “Trains & Things” invites visitors to explore railroad memorabilia and get involved with some engineering challenges.  Kevin McGinty of Boyne City will have a model train up and running, complete with a working circus. The Center will have train artifacts from its collection on display and invites others in the community to share their love of trains as part of the Center’s “Trains & Things” Exhibit. Whether you have old photos and postcards or old railroad spikes that you found as a kid, we would love to include your historical memorabilia in this exciting exhibit.  Hands-on activities include building your own engine or caboose out of household materials; designing and testing a section of track to keep a train (marble) from derailing and/or creating a ramp system to slow the train (golf ball) down.  This is the second year that the Center is collaborating to bring in a special display and hands-on activities for visitors over spring break.  The “Trains & Things” Exhibit is sponsored in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) through Raven Hill's 2016 Operational Grant award.  The exhibit runs daily from 10 am to 4 pm starting Saturday, March 28 through Wednesday, April 20.  The exhibit is open to the public.  The hands-on museum and animals will also be available for visitors to explore and the outdoor exhibits will be open.  General admission is $10 per person.  No appointment is needed during regularly scheduled hours.  Please note that this special exhibit will not be open during FREE Second Saturday on April 9.

We need YOU! Join our Board of Directors
Happy Hour Information Session
Tuesday, March 15, 5:30 - 7pm

Raven Hill Discovery Center is looking for new Board members. If you are interested in science, art, history, outdoors or even reptiles; if you are passionate about making education fun again for everyone; if you are inspired to bring more affordable arts opportunities to our community, then our Board may be the place for you.

Join us at Raven Hill for appetizers and a drink after work on Tuesday, March 15 from 5:30 to 7 pm.  We will host a short presentation on what it means to be on a board. You will have a chance to socialize and enjoy some great food, get an idea about being on a board and consider whether Raven Hill Discovery Center might be the right fit for you! We are looking for up to five new board members to join our team; no experience necessary (we will all be learning together).

RSVP deadling has been extended to Monday March 14th.  We are also now offering supervised museum play time for kids that need to come so that you can take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about getting involved with Raven Hill Discovery Center as a board member.

Check out more information and RSVP on Facebook, or call 231.536.3369.
